Licensed Psychologist/Clinical Supervisor
After earning my doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas in 1988, I have pursued a career largely – but not wholly – in academia. As a former doctoral training director at Texas Woman’s University, I am an experienced supervisor and member of the training community. It has been a joy to be a part of the professional journey of so many gifted practicum students, doctoral interns, and post-docs; these are among the most rewarding of professional activities I do. My theoretical orientation is a flexible integration of Relational-Cultural, Emotion-focused, and Systems theories – always through the lens of cultural humility.
The professional accomplishments most relevant to my role at Wellness 360 include helping to train over 500 master’s and doctoral level psychotherapists. I have been consistently involved in issues regarding training at the national level, received the Outstanding Training Director Award from the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP; Division 17 of the American Psychological Association), served as a reviewer for the journal Training and Education in Professional Psychology, and co-authored the most recent version of the Counseling Psychology Model Training Program. I am deeply committed to issues of social justice and work hard to be an effective ally/accomplice to those holding marginalized identities, with a focus on structural changes to the way we work in our organizations and with our closest constituents. For example, prior to leaving TWU, I secured a $317,000 grant for BIPOC Women’s Leadership in Psychology and was able to fund 12 students with those monies.
I created an accountability dashboard so our program could track progress in reviewing policies and procedures to be examined through an anti-racist perspective and made sure it was on every program meeting agenda. As I transition into new aspects in my professional life, I look forward to continuing to live the values that underlie my supervisory and diversity activities with positive energy and compassion.
When not doing psychology stuff, you can find me walking with my two jaunty terrier rescues, trying out new recipes from across the globe, tending my garden, or planning my next delightful vacay with my partner of almost 3 decades. I’m also working on becoming certified with the Academy of Dog Trainers.
